Shopping for groceries felt like an initiation into adulthood. However, I used to feel like I spent more than I should for basic household necessities. Through years of browsing the isles for good deals, I finally found the most efficient way to shop! Here are 5 simple ways you can start saving on groceries today!
1: A loyalty membership.
I used to think that loyalty memberships were pointless because all they did was collect your data and give you false hope. It took me a year (and wasted savings) to realize that that's not true! There is no doubt that my data is being collected, and so is everyone who lives on the grid. A loyalty membership allowed me to gain points and get cash back, exclusive coupons, rewards for my birthday, and monthly savings! It's safe to say that I've saved hundreds a year just by joining a loyalty program.
2: Buy in bulk.
Buying in bulk has always been a habit for me (also how I outlasted the COVID toilet paper crisis). That's because certain grocery stores have "buy more and save" deals that give out a certain percentage off when you buy above a certain quantity. Furthermore, it saves me time too! You don't necessarily need to buy Costco sized products but as much as you need to last a week, 2 weeks, or even more. Also, don't bulk on fresh produce or meat (not a great idea).
3: Subscription.
Ever ran out of toilet paper or other necessities and half your life flashes before your eyes? Subscription plans curb that problem, saves you time, and money too! Some subscription services provide great discounts when you sign-up and further reductions after a certain number of deliveries. Saving time and money has never felt this satisfying!
4: Look out for bundle promotions.
Some products are put on promotion in the form of a bundle. Sometimes, I would get 2 dishwashing liquid bottles and that somehow lasts me awhile with a free sponge or some other random item. Especially before the new college semester starts, places like Target and Walmart are flooded with bundle deals for almost any household needs (even alcohol)!
5: A little lifestyle change.
Sometimes, we spend a little too much due to our residual lifestyles from our parents' home. From an insane roll of toilet paper usage to and endless ice-cream supply, sometimes embracing a healthier and slightly frugal lifestyle can reduce one's cost of living. From buying fresher ingredients as opposed to pre-packed frozen meat to cutting down on the amount of salt used in cooking, every little step taken to a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle would add up to bigger savings periodically. Of course, it's always encouraged to treat yourself every once in awhile but certainly not every day.
Bottom line
These methods have worked for me, but may not work for some of you and that's okay. Different regions may have different prices for goods and everyone lives different lives. These sound like a no-brainer and probably hardly every crossed my mind until I figured I needed to get a grip on my life. So go explore your options!
