We all remember when Rolls Royce first unveiled the very first Coachbuild as part of the Boat Tail series which left the automotive world in awe. With a total of three to be made, Rolls Royce announced their second one, and again, they never fail to amaze! Let's take a closer look at the latest piece of automotive art:
We pretty much have an understanding on what the Coachbuild is all about and how it connects to Rolls Royce's philosophy. But what makes this one different from the first one?
At first glance, the Rolls Royce Coachbuild Boat Tail is the idea of combining both nautical and automotive luxuries into a yacht on the road. The yacht is the very essence of luxury for many and what better way to showcase that with a Boat Tail that reminiscent the yachts on the waters of Lake Como.
This particular "objet d'art" was commissioned by a client to pay homage to his family and father whose family business is base on his father's involvement in the pearling industry. Having traveled far and wide as well as spending much of his time overseas, the client developed a love and passion for art. Additionally he owns a vast collection of cars, both classic and modern, housed in his own private collection. This beautiful Boat Tail reflects the story behind the customer himself with his character of artistic sophistication.
Brought from the client's personal pearl collection, he presented the team at Rolls Royce four pearls to come up with a color that represents the changing tones of the pearls under different light. This sparked the creation of the most complex exterior color and finish from Rolls Royce for this Boat Tail. According to Rolls Royce, the foundation of the color is a blend of oyster and soft rose with large white and bronze mica flakes finished with a crystal and ice matt clear coat.
The rear deck which serves as the unique "butterfly design" housing suite is made of Royal Walnut veneer, "inlaid with rose gold-plated pinstripes with a satin-brushed finish to ensure a sensitive and sophisticated appearance" according to Rolls Royce. The choice of the Royal Walnut was selected to be used by the client for its unique aging properties that would reveal a cognac color overtime. Finally, the Coach Build holds the Spirit of Ecstasy fashioned in rose gold.
Transitioning to the interior, the panels of the console are fitted with Royal Walnut veneer with rose gold pinstripes and mother-of pearl accents throughout while the leathers are matched with oyster and cognac shades with a pearlescent finish. This trully showcases the design of a yacht with added warmth to its interior.
"Boat Tail is a step-change in ingenuity and creative liberty. Building a motor car by hand offers a new realm of exploration and possibility: we can accomplish things and resolve challenges that normal industrialised methods would prohibit. This is the tale of two worlds: a modern motor car of contemporary design, made possible by historical techniques and time-honoured craft. It is truly, one-of-a-kind.” says Alex Innes, Head of Coachbuild Design at Rolls Royce.
